Accuracy, Reliability, Simplicity with Portability

Premier Diagnostics DS2
The DS2 Smoke Head is well suited to ATF’s or roadside agencies due to its rugged design and user friendly operation.

Fleet operators, service workshops and roadside testing agencies will benefit from the DS2 Smoke Meter accuracy, reliability, unique portability and ease of use.

The DS2 is designed and engineered to cater for all types of diesel engined vehicles and plant and is lightweight yet rugged. The Smokehead itself weighs only 5Kg and has a portable display unit for use in car or cab. This means that the physical test can be conducted by a single man with the cable-less Oil Temp Probe communicating directly with the display unit.

This machine is able to rapidly automatically calculate peak and average readings for quick and accurate test results, but the biggest step forward with this unit is the removal of filters from the system, thus totally eliminating the lost time caused by breakage and loss – this is a problem still remains with competitor units.

The entire unit is British Built to the highest standards and this ensures excellent field reliability as well as a design which is well suited to the rigours of, for example, a high volume MOT bay as the entire unit is stored within a sturdy base station for protection.

Decisions Decisions

A majority of garage owners looking to integrate an mot bay into their existing workshops look at Class 4 testing. It is the obvious starting point when a majority of the work available is for this type of vehicle, but limiting your opportunities purely to PLG and car based vans may be rather shortsighted, although the geographic location of the garage can have an impact on this decision.

Surprisingly, the additional cost of Class 7 mot equipment is not significantly more than for Class 4 therefore for a relatively small on-cost it might also be financially viable to consider the additional vehicle classes and markets that can be tested with a Class 7 bay. Other than the obvious Class 7 options, Class 5L testing or Class 4 motorhomes which cannot be accommodated on a normal Class 4 MoT bay may be captured.

As I mentioned in the pre-amble,  the decision can also be geographically driven as if you’ve a multitude of Class 7 premises placed fairly locally then the opportunities may be limited whereas if you are “out in the sticks” or on a business park/estate where Class 7’s frequent than the advantages really may outweigh the small additional costs.

Whilst the cost implications are, fairly, minor – dimensionally things become a whole lot more difficult and it is normally either the available headroom or doorway which becomes the problem. The additional headroom requirement for a lift based bay of 4.8m is the most common problem to encounter.

Our advice here is straightforward when making a quick assessment – use information freely available in the public domain to understand the feasibility of the project. GETECH publish a series of ‘Standard Installation Drawings” on our website but for the purposes of this specific blog article the class 7 hyperlinks to the drawings for both lift and pit based installations are shown at the end of this article.

NOTE: Did you notice that an inspection pit might also be an option?

If the required headroom is not available in the proposed MoT bay location it is possible to gain approval using an inspection pit – overall using a pit may be considered as a win-win situation as although the groundwork cost is more significant the overall capital equipment cost reduces – further benefits once installed include the fact that 6 monthly inspections to LOLER are not required.

As part of our MOT projects we fully support customers throughout the entire project process from placement of order through to ongoing servicing and calibrations and part of this work also includes the preparation of drawings to support the paperwork applications.

To that end we constantly circulate the country so the opportunity to get one of our project managers on-site to look at the proposal exists – this work is undertaken for free unless specific short term timing is required.

To find out more on this service or for clarification on any of the points raised in this article you can respond below or by calling our MOT project experts on 0844 800 9785 during normal working hours.

A Valuable Addition…

Investment in testing equipment is not normally high on any existing test stations list of action items. Having established your business over a number of years things may have reached the point of happy equilibrium. A fairly predictable workload week on week is a position of some comfort for any business owner – it allows an ability to plan and the facility to invest.

GETECH GE457In recent years by far, in our opinion, the most valuable addition to the mot testing scheme is the hydraulic play detector or shaker plate. These allow any 2 man testing station to change to a One Person Testing situation that allows the mot assistant to be relocated into other – more productive, areas of the business.

So how much does an MOT assistant cost per annum? Certainly a lot more than the investment in a set of play detectors which can be supplied to an existing garage for less than £4000 nett!

GETECH utilise a hydraulic system for the operation of our play detection equipment, although some other manufacturers still utilise a less repeatable pneumatic drive system.

OMA 547 RHAlso, by design, GETECH play detectors have all the working parts in a single play detector plate which reduces groundwork for pit installations. The same philosophy is also applied to the versions of these play detectors designed for lift installations – although this a slightly more expensive product due to the manufacturing sourcing which is driven by MOT regulations.

Opting for play detection on an existing MOT bay offers additional benefits as well. The actual inspection of the play in steering and suspension components becomes more repeatable, and so also the likelyhood of damage to a vehicle is less than it might be with the old manual system.

500% More Warranty. 0% Hassle

In the market for an MOT Bay?

Perhaps you will decide on the supplier of your MOT bay on the basis of the manufacturer name? Tecalemit, Boston, Snap-On or Bradbury for example.

Potentially you will seek advice from another garage in your area and used their experiences to make your decision.

You may only be driven by price… but whatever the reason, consider a GETECH MOT Equipment Package.

GETECH offer a true “market leading” warranty – a 5 year across the board parts warranty provided only that you are legally compliant in the maintenance of the equipment.

In many cases this is 500% more than is offered as standard by our competition!

We offer you this additional warranty for one reason alone – It allows you to understand the quality of the equipment you purchase when opting for a GETECH bay.

Our competition don’t want you to know, but it’s no secret that most of the main equipment in our packages is manufactured in Holland by the same production facility that produces the “brand name” products – Therefore you are assured of no reduction in the quality of the equipment you purchase, you are merely improving the post sale field warranty on the purchase you are making and cutting out a distribution loop by dealing directly with us as the manufacturing importer.

Irrespective of this, our brand name is very important to us, your long-term commitment to us as a customer even more so; so you can be assured that we will fully support you from the moment you commit to an order through the entire product lifespan with good “old-fashioned” service.

Our retro approach to our support is mirrored in our products. By opting to design our equipment in a modular format we offer the opportunity for a bespoke mot bay which can grow alongside the development of your business and by utilising industrial components rather than PC’s we are able to deliver a consistently more stable testing platform than our competitors.

What’s the next step?

Call us on 0844 800 9785 – we can talk you through the costs of achieving the bay openly so that you can see the costs of a GETECH bay look fantastic too!

CASE STUDY: Crispy’s Motorcycles

Crispy's Motorcycle Brake Test 2When we were approached by Chris Brian in Plymouth with an enquiry for an MOT bay we were amazed with what we were told…

We were not the first phone number on his list!

OK. Maybe it is a little presumptuous to assume that we would always be the first call for any mot related equipment enquiries – but knowing what a good job we actually do for our customer’s it’s a little frustrating that the word hasn’t spread a little further afield than the 4 walls of our office sometimes!

In all seriousness though, it was incredible to find that those who had actually been given the enquiry were simply not able (or willing in at least one instance) to travel to Plymouth to talk through the enquiry face to face and understand; on the ground, the projects true feasibility.

Given that the MoT bay was part of a bigger project to relocate the entire business to a larger workshop area, it seemed fairly important to us to visit site as soon as possible to give Chris the answers he sought before he signed the contract for the premises.

Walking into the building it immediately became apparent that space was going to be at a premium. A class 1 and 2 mot bay takes up a lot more room than you might imagine [as one has to account for sidecar combinations] nevertheless we immediately set about laying out the various options that would work within the given space envelope… Despite spatial restrictions with mezzanine supports it was possible to identify 2 serious contenders for the final bay arrangement.

The final decision in the end made itself.

Crispy's Motorcycle Brake TestIt is nearly always preferable to install motorcycle bays near or inside of the doorway due to the requirement to accommodate motorcycle with sidecar through the premises to the bay itself. It was agreed that a bay installed through 90 degrees allowed the minimum disruption to the remainder of the workshop area.

Having quoted the job in advance we sought to clarify the entire project and what we would do. Sufficiently impressed with our presentation, we set about the application paperwork together. [Customers are always fully supported from point of sale through the application process and although not all the necessary supporting evidence was available at the time of the visit a complete list was compiled and actions given to ensure responsibilities were known]

Part of this paperwork application required local council planning liaison as the previous usage of the building was not motor trade related. In instances like this we [GETECH] take responsibility for speaking to Council’s. There are many good reasons for this, as anyone who has dealt with a local planning structure will know!

Over the forthcoming few weeks the rest of the project came together and all the supporting evidence was gathered and submitted for pre-approval with the ministry.

Next, for all concerned a stroke of luck! The application process simplified somewhat – this was good news from our perspective but for new applicants a potentially worrying time with no “second set of eyes” on the premises and the pre-approval given on a drawing only!

That is a lot of responsibility for a privateer. With regulations complicated for multi-class bays, employing professional expertise seems sensible on any new project.

With paperwork pre-approval granted the project only required groundwork and electrical provision, delivery and installation before we gained the full approval for the new bay. Realisation was fast approaching!

Enter the curveball!

Receiving a call after office hours from the AE it became apparent that the timeline needed to radically reduce in order to hit timings which were to be published in the press.

Fortunately we were able to respond to the request rapidly and the bay was installed the following week, the slack preventing any issues with existing service contract customers without jeopardising the overall timeline.

Crispy's Motorcycle Headlight TestCompleting the installation and producing the certification necessary for approval to be granted by the DVSA in due course, Chris was left fully trained, but slightly stunned that the project that had been in the back of his mind for some time was actually complete, in the ground and ready to run!
