No matter what repairs your garage might already be prepared to offer : Body Repairs, Tyres, Exhausts etc. there is no doubt that the one investment which is practically guarenteed to lift your workshop turnover is an MOT bay.
Whilst the investment can be quite high when taken in isolation, the Return on Investment (ROI) is actually very good indeed. Of course all motor vehicles are required to have a yearly MOT inspection and incorporating an MOT bay into your existing garage is an opportunity to maintain existing customers and to gain new ones.
If you are currently offering an MOT service to your customers but doing this by using another local garages MOT bay then you are literally throwing away thousands of pounds in turnover and potentially pushing your existing customer base to your off-site MOT competitor – after all it is their details which will appear on the official documentation.
As far as the analysis is concerned the starting point is the cost of the bay investment. This is not just limited to the equipment itself. You will also need to account for civil groundworks, possible electrical provisioning works and training. Dependant on the type of bay you opt for will obviously dictate the ROI but as an example…
- MoT Bay Equipment: £30000
- Civil & Electrical Preparation: £5000
- Training: £500
- Initial Investment: £35,500
- Initial Cash Outlay: £5500
- Amount to be leased: £30,000 @ £800+VAT pcm
- (you are not allowed to lease groundwork or training (generally))
- Month 1 Cash Demand: £6,250+VAT
- Month 2-60 Cash Demand: £800+VAT
- Assuming £45 per Class 7 and £35 per Class 4 and an assumed 50/50 split we achieve an average cost per test of £40.
- Most bays can do a minimum of 8 per day therefore £320 per day in TEST FEES ALONE. Therefore just Mon-Friday opening brings in an absolute bare minimum turnover of £1,600 for a single 5 day working week – that’s £6,933 profit per month ; nearly nine times the actual rental cost by the end of the month!
Breaking things down in reverse then we can identify how many MoT’s it takes to cover the cost of the investment just in test fees. Using the numbers above this is easily calculable.
£800 per month / £40 per test = 20 tests per month or an average of 1.12 test per day!
If you are outsourcing your MOT’s to another garage how costly is that decision to your business?
By now you should be convinced an MoT bay can catapult you into the Premier League, and that we can get you there! But this all seems too good to be true right?
Well, to a certain extent that is true because you will need to pay a tester (or train yourself/train from within) and the costs for yearly maintenance and calibration are not included but this only equates to around £1500 per annum – you might not charge £40 for your MOT as a rolling average, but what you cannot escape from in any analysis is the opportunity this investment offers your business, because in identifying the additional “unseen” costs we should also show balance and identify the “financial opportunities that an MOT bay generates – such as at least 25% of the vehicles on test are likely to fail which generates service work for the repair side of the business – these profit opportunities will clearly far outweigh those “unseen costs” and leave you very much into a significant turnover, and therefore profit situation.
A GETECH MoT bay will give you years of reliable service with little or no intervention from us other than your bi-annual calibrations required to keep you legal in the DVSA system.
We are so confident in the quality and reliability of our equipment that we offer an extended 5 year part warranty on all GETECH products and, our Brake Roller Tester roller coverings now come with a limited lifetime guarantee!
Just call us during normal office hours and allow us to explain the entire process clearly to you. Our fully inclusive service allows you to run any existing business interests whilst we get you there…faster.
Our bay packages include practically everything for you to achieve your goals – the equipment, the project management, all the required paperwork for the first year of calibration and a service contract for peace of mind- in fact the only 2 things we do not supply are the customers to populate your bay, and the groundwork and electrical provisioning for the bay (and that is only because we don’t know at the outset the exact bay configuration!)
On average GETECH can get you to your desired goal of MoT testing much faster than by applying yourself due to our specialism in this area. As manufacturers we are closely aligned with understanding and interpreting the regulations so we can get you pre-approved, installed and signed off as a concurrent project from as little as 6 weeks if all the details are finalised or, worst case 18 weeks. Experience tells us as a rolling average and based on the current situations within the DVSA that approval can be fully achieved in about 12 weeks as most sites do not have, for example, the correct planning permission in place.
