Wheel Alignment is an area of vehicle repair and assessment which is very often misunderstood.
Many garages cite a 2×2 laser wheel alignment system for measurement, the adjustment being controlled by inspectors manually using eyes only. These systems are the cheaper end of the alignment scale. In fact, as a wheel alignment tool they are fairly useless other than they allow garages to extract a small profit whilst providing a small improvement in the customers vehicle condition.
If you ask us what wheel alignment is we would say “it is a full chassis and geometry alignment check” – in other words we align each wheel to the chassis of the vehicle (eliminating any crabbing and re-setting the vehicle back to the manufacturers design specification). This “system reset” ensures straight line stability and cornering ability of the vehicle, bringing it back to optimum performance.
Obviously these systems start at a budget pricing and go all the way through to “top-end” set-ups which may be in excess of £20k of hardware in total.
Given these costs it is not surprising that so many “play” at wheel alignment – but the truth is, by investigating in at least a mid-range system, and targeting your market, there are good profits to be made in aligbnment with tangible benefits to your customers which should be fairly easy to sell: reduced tyre wear, reduced fuel costs.
