A play detector is a piece of equipment which is placed onto a vehicle lift or into an inspection pit situation to load the steering components and suspension components of a test vehicle during an MOT. It is designed to offer a repeatable process of examination.
The availability of wheel play detectors to suit these situations has grown exponentially since the One Person Test Lane and Automated Test Lane concepts were instigated in 2005 by the DVSA; or VOSA as was.
Since the suspension and steering systems are operated by equipment, the assistant is not required to fulfil these functions under instruction from the tester and can be removed altogether from the test procedure.
This allows garage owners the chance to redeploy the assistant to a more production use within the garage.
Play Detectors can be single plate or dual plate, hydraulic or pneumatic – of these choices from an engineering perspective you might be swayed toward a hydraulic single plate version to minimise the groundwork requirement prior to fitment and to eliminate the potential costs pertaining to water traps, or the risks that might be associated with compressor reliability).
GETECH play detectors are, you will not be surprised to learn, of single plate hydraulic design and can be supplied to suit pit or lift based installations. The operation of the equipment is such that when the control button is pressed, the plate cycles through a complete set of operations – full rotation left to right to centreline, and inside to outside to centreline; meaning you can just watch for any play which is detected.
