What are a Service, Secondary and Parking Brake Systems Used For?

After a long discussion with a customer this morning on our various decelerometer packages for vehicle testing, I thought it prudent to explain, very briefly, the three primary types of brake system used on HGV’s.

The three main braking systems on a HGV are the service brake (which performs the primary function of stopping the vehicle when you depress the footbrake), a secondary brake – used in the event of a failure of the service brake, and a parking brakes which are only used when the vehicle is stationary, including if you are making a short stop facing uphill.

If you are selecting a unit for 6 weekly fleet brake checks it is important to understand the brake types the fleet as are several versions available. Fleet operators who have some secondary braked vehicles should opt for the meter with the separate memory slot for secondary brake, preferably with a printer, even if a majority of the work is on smaller vehicles or rigids.
