One Person Test Lanes

If and when you are looking to replace an existing MOT bay then you might be caught up in the confusion between ATL and OPT testing.

Whilst ATL was hailed “the future of MOT testing” back in 2005, the truth is that the MOT scheme has moved on somewhat from that point and, whilst ATL is an opportunity that remains available; the truth is that you probably don’t need to install an ATL bay to get to YOUR desired goal as the garage owner…. The entire bay operation run by a single man.

An opportunity exists in the mid-ground – the One Person Test Lane (OPTL) – this bay is an ATL lift or pit but with a normal manual brake tester (which saves you money).

ATL testing, although technically superior to OPTL testing, has been consigned to the back burner in a market which is consistently driven to reduce costs rather than to implement the most technical robust testing solution. That is a massive shame considering the repeatability that ATL testing offers and the fact that the brake test itself was based on an as presented (real) condition.

The failure of ATL has been exacerbated by the failure to require all manufacturers equipment to test to the latest PASS/FAIL criteria, but more critically by the lack of support from the DVSA for their own baby. This now means that in 2018 you only really should consider an ATL if you are testing all vehicle classes (excl. HGV) within a combined bay environment.

However GETECH can build you a bespoke solution – Standard Testing, OPTL & ATL all of which are achievable either “out of the box” or through modular upgrades – so thankfully you can grow your own facility naturally in-line with your business expansion.
